Mlýn and Villa Hrušky revitalize South Moravian heritage
The Mlýn and Villa Hrušky project in South Moravia represents a new approach to regional tourism by integrating award-winning architecture, curated wine selection, gastronomy, and Czech artisanal glass. The project aims to move away from cliché tourist attractions in favor of a more sophisticated experience.
The site originated from a family legacy; Dušan Svoboda’s grandfather built a modern machine mill and a family house in Hrušky during the 1930s. Following the events of 1948, the family lost the mill, which eventually became a decaying brownfield, while the house remained unfinished. After the property returned to the family, Svoboda sought to create a lasting legacy from his grandfather’s efforts.
Architects Petr Pelčák and Lenka Vořechovská led the revitalization of the former mill. Rather than creating a modern replacement, they focused on a sensitive reconstruction that preserves the original industrial structure as an integral part of the interior. The project has received recognition through the Czech Architecture Award.
