Mělník energy complex construction advances with new steam-gas source

Construction is underway for a new steam-gas energy source at the Mělník energy site in the Czech Republic. Following the receipt of a building permit in August 2026, work has begun on site demolitions, terrain adjustments, and site preparation.

Key technological components are currently being manufactured in Sweden and Germany. Specifically, SGT-800 combustion turbines are being produced in Finspång, Sweden, while SST-500 steam turbines are being manufactured in Görlitz, Germany.

The new source is expected to have an electrical capacity of 266 MW and a thermal capacity of 183 MW. It is projected to produce nearly 730 GWh of electricity and up to 2 PJ of heat annually, contributing approximately 30 percent of the total heat supply from the Mělník location. The project, which aims to replace coal-based heat production, is scheduled to be operational by 2029.

This development is part of a broader transformation of the Mělník complex, with total investments estimated to exceed 50 billion CZK. The project includes the addition of a substation and gas distribution networks to support the transition to low-emission energy.
