Mělník III site transitions from coal to gas-fired power

Five years after the decommissioning of Mělník III, the former largest coal-fired power plant in the Czech Republic, the site is undergoing a major energy transition. Commissioned in 1981 with a 500 MW capacity, the plant produced over 77 million MWh of electricity during its three decades of operation before being formally removed from the national energy system in August 2021.

Energy company ČEZ is leading the site's transformation by investing between 20 and 30 billion crowns into lower-emission technologies. The centerpiece of this project is the construction of the country’s largest combined-cycle gas-fired heat and power plant, which is expected to be operational by 2029. This shift aims to reduce emissions by more than half while maintaining a stable heat supply for approximately 250,000 households in Prague, Mělník, Neratovice, and surrounding municipalities. Remaining coal-fired operations at the Mělník site are scheduled to conclude by 2030.
