Mělník opens new nursery facility to address childcare shortage
The city of Mělník has addressed a long-standing shortage of nursery school places by constructing a new facility with a capacity for 48 children. The project aims to support parents who need to return to employment earlier than the standard three or four years of parental leave.
Mayor Tomáš Martinec noted that the service has seen significant demand, with most spots filled within three years. The new building features sustainable elements, including a green roof, solar panels, floor heating, and a ventilation system with recuperation.
To ensure affordability, the monthly tuition is set at 800 CZK, matching existing local nurseries, with daily meal costs at 45 CZK. The project was largely funded by a 35 million CZK subsidy from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, with the city contributing approximately 2 million CZK.
