MMM celebrates 57th anniversary without Paul Bérenger
The Mouvement militant mauricien (MMM) held its 57th anniversary congress in Réduit, marking a significant transition for the party. For the first time in over 40 years, the event took place without its historical leader, Paul Bérenger, as the current leadership seeks to establish the party's identity independently.
Party President Reza Uteem defended the decision to remain part of the government within the Alliance du Changement. Uteem noted that the decision was supported by a secret ballot of the central committee and subsequently by the assembly of delegates. He argued that participating in the government is the most effective way for the MMM to implement its programs regarding economic development, social justice, and equal opportunity.
Uteem also addressed internal tensions, criticizing the labeling of members who follow Bérenger as ‘Judas’ after they respected the party's official vote. He emphasized that the party's existence relies on its militant base and expressed a commitment to fighting communalism and promoting national unity.
