Mumbai crane collapse in Kurla injures over 10 people

A large crane operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) collapsed in the Kurla East area of Mumbai during the early hours of Friday, August 21, 2026. The incident occurred while the machinery was being positioned to lift a Poclain machine for an upcoming eviction and demolition operation by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).

The collapse resulted in injuries to at least eight to eleven people, including a three-month-old baby and a 10-year-old boy. The injured were treated at Sion and Kurla Bhabha hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. The falling crane struck residential structures in the Qureshi Nagar slum area and damaged several parked vehicles.

The accident also impacted local infrastructure, as part of the crane came into contact with overhead electrical equipment (OHE) on the Kurla-Trombay railway section. While this disrupted goods train movement on the single-line route, Central Railway reported that regular passenger operations were not significantly affected. The MMRDA has acknowledged responsibility for the incident, and local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause, with preliminary assessments suggesting soft or muddy ground may have contributed to the loss of stability.
