Mönchengladbach deportation facility to cost 313 million euros

The North Rhine-Westphalia Refugee Ministry has announced that the construction of a second deportation detention facility will cost approximately 313 million euros. The project, which was decided following the 2024 Solingen terror attack, is planned for the former JHQ military site in Mönchengladbach.

The total budget includes 220 million euros for construction, 38.7 million euros for land acquisition, and 55 million euros for planning. While the state has signed a purchase contract with the federal government, final approval is still required from the Bundesrat, the Bundestag, and the Federal Ministry of Finance. This process is expected to take up to six months.

Due to these pending approvals, no official start date for construction or operation has been set. Lisa Kapteinat, Vice Chair of the SPD parliamentary group, criticized the delay, noting that half of the funds from the security package were allocated to this project, yet planning remains insufficiently concrete 20 months later.
