MnDOT installs 300 digital speed signs on rural Minnesota highways

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and its partners have installed more than 300 Vehicle Speed Feedback Signs along rural highways across the state. These digital signs are designed to detect and display driver speeds as they approach small towns or reduced speed zones to encourage safer driving habits.

Officials are implementing this measure because speeding remains a primary cause of serious injuries and fatalities on Minnesota roads. Preliminary 2025 data indicates 388 speed-related serious injuries and 102 speed-related fatalities in the state, with approximately 65% of speed-related deaths involving a driver traveling at least 10 miles per hour over the limit.

Following installation, local agencies or cities will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the signs. MnDOT Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger stated, “Slowing down saves lives. It’s that simple.” In addition to these signs, the agency is launching a work zone speed safety camera pilot project to further address safety in construction areas.
