Mónica González Contró reappointed director of UNAM's Institute of Legal Research

Mónica González Contró has been ratified by the Governing Board of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to serve a second four-year term as director of the Institute of Legal Research (IIJ) for the 2025-2029 period.

During the inauguration, González Contró emphasized the need for law to contribute to a more just world, noting that both international and local legal landscapes have changed rapidly. She highlighted the rise of ultra-conservative governments globally and noted that Mexico's Constitution has undergone more than 22 reforms in the last two years.

The decision by the 15-member Governing Board followed deliberations between three candidates, including Marisol Anglés Hernández and Guillermo Estrada Adán. Her reappointment comes amid significant transformations in the Mexican justice system, specifically regarding judicial reforms, tasking the Institute with maintaining its role in academic and public discourse on democracy and legal institutions.
