Mónica Sandoval proposes digital violence protections for Mexican minors
Mexican federal deputy Mónica Sandoval Hernández has introduced a legislative initiative to reform Article 47 of the General Law on the Rights of Children and Adolescents. The proposal aims to strengthen protections against digital violence and cyberbullying to safeguard the physical integrity, mental health, and privacy of minors.
Data highlights the urgency of the measure, noting that 88.4% of adolescents aged 12 to 17 are active social media users. Reports indicate that cyberbullying disproportionately affects young women, with 23.7% reporting harassment compared to 17.6% of males. Additionally, UNICEF reports suggest that more than one in five children globally in this age group has experienced sexual abuse or exploitation on digital platforms.
