Mónica Soto Fregoso resigns as TEPJF magistrate

The Permanent Commission of the Mexican Congress has approved the resignation of Mónica Soto Fregoso from her position as a magistrate of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF), effective August 31. The decision passed with 26 votes in favor from Morena and its allies (PT and PVEM), while five votes were cast against by PAN, PRI, and Movimiento Ciudadano, alongside five abstentions.

Opposition legislators criticized the move, arguing that the resignation lacks a serious underlying cause and should not be treated as a mere administrative formality. Critics pointed to controversial rulings made by Soto Fregoso regarding judicial voting and political figures. Conversely, supporters from the Morena party argued that addressing the resignation is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of democratic institutions and to align with the government's vision of justice.

The resignation follows previous departures from the tribunal, such as that of Janine Otálora Malassis. There has been public speculation regarding whether Soto Fregoso might transition to a role within the federal administration, though current indications suggest no immediate plans for such a move by the presidency.
