Mäo junction upgrade reopens to improve Estonian bus connections

The upgraded Mäo highway junction in Central Estonia has officially reopened to traffic, featuring new bus stops, two roundabouts, and a 30-space parking lot. The infrastructure is designed to improve long-distance bus connections and enhance road safety by allowing buses to stop more conveniently and facilitating easier transfers for passengers.

Lux Express has begun making symbolic stops at the junction, with plans to integrate ten routes toward Tallinn and ten toward Tartu into the schedule. Other bus operators are expected to begin services at the location as early as November.

Despite the improvements, the site currently lacks a permanent passenger terminal and proper public bathrooms, with only a temporary portable toilet available. The Transport Administration stated that building passenger terminals is the responsibility of local governments or public transport centers rather than the national road maintenance agency. Infrastructure Minister Kuldar Leis suggested that such projects should be a collaborative effort between the state and local authorities.
