Mobile, Alabama ends private banner program after ideological clashes

The city of Mobile, Alabama, has announced it is ending private access to its downtown banner program. This policy change follows a series of ideological clashes involving public light pole displays.

In June, privately funded Pride Month banners were displayed throughout the city. In response, Pastor Travis Johnson spearheaded a campaign featuring anti-trans banners with the slogan “Protect Our Children From Gender Ideology.” Johnson stated the campaign was a response to the Pride banners, describing Mobile as a “faith-oriented community.”

Following these competing campaigns, the city decided that future banners hung downtown will exclusively promote official city programs and events. Mobile Media Relations Manager Dale Liesch noted that private use of the program can be a distraction for staff and detract from the city's core mission.
