Mobile battery market shifts toward semi-solid state technology amid new safety regulations

New safety standards and regulations are reshaping the mobile battery market. Following strict new aviation rules implemented in mid-April 2026, which generally prohibit the use and charging of mobile batteries on aircraft and limit carry-on quantities to two per person, consumer focus has shifted toward safety and efficiency.

To address rising concerns over overheating and fire risks, manufacturers are adopting next-generation battery technologies. Companies like Elecom are introducing mobile batteries utilizing semi-solid state lithium-ion technology, which uses a gel-like electrolyte to reduce the risk of leakage and combustion.

Other emerging standards include the use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, known for their stable crystal structure and high safety profiles, and batteries offering extended lifecycles of 1,000 to 2,000 charge cycles. Additionally, high-output features such as USB Power Delivery (PD) are becoming essential to allow for rapid charging during limited downtime.
