Mobile payment technologies and smartphone-based processing

Digital payment methods are evolving to allow for more flexible transactions through smartphones. In Hong Kong, mobile payments include e-wallets, stored-value facilities like Octopus, and contactless services like Apple Pay. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) licenses and supervises these stored-value facilities. Users can pay via QR code scanning or NFC-enabled tapping, with the Faster Payment System (FPS) connecting banks and wallet operators to support both Hong Kong dollar and renminbi transactions.

Additionally, new features such as SumUp’s ‘Tap to Pay’ allow small business owners and independent traders to transform compatible smartphones into payment terminals. This eliminates the need for dedicated card reader hardware, enabling contactless transactions via bank cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets. While the setup for such features may be free, transaction fees typically apply to the processed payments.
