Mobile payments become most popular payment method in Czech Republic

Mobile payments have become the most popular and frequent method of payment in the Czech Republic, according to a new Mastercard survey conducted by the research agency G82. The study reveals that 61 percent of Czechs now use mobile payments, a significant increase from just 19 percent six years ago.

Among respondents, the mobile phone is the most preferred payment method at 37 percent, followed by payment cards at 34 percent and cash at 21 percent. When asked which method they use most frequently, 31 percent chose mobile, 28 percent chose cards, and 16 percent chose cash.

Jana Lvová, General Manager of Mastercard for the Czech and Slovak Republics, noted that this shift reflects changing lifestyles. The survey also highlighted a change in the items people carry when leaving home; while mobile phones remain the top item, wallets with cash have dropped to fourth place, falling behind payment cards and keys. The rise in digital adoption is attributed to convenience, speed, and increased trust in security technologies like tokenization, which protects sensitive data by not transmitting actual card numbers during transactions.
