Mobile privacy research reveals Android screen capture and VPN tracking risks
Recent research into mobile application security has revealed significant privacy risks for Android and VPN users. An extensive study of 17,260 Android applications found no evidence that smartphones are constantly listening to users via microphones to serve advertisements. However, the study identified a different threat: several applications were capable of capturing screenshots and short videos of user activity, transmitting this visual data to third-party companies without user notification. This poses a risk to sensitive information such as passwords and banking credentials.
In a separate analysis, Proton reported that 85% of mobile VPN applications in the United States contain advertising or analytical trackers. These trackers collect data including device identifiers, model types, and network information. The study noted that data flows from these trackers reach various international destinations, including China, Russia, and Israel. Specifically, during June 2026, trackers transmitted data to China in 1.5 million downloads and to Russia in 1.4 million downloads.
