Mobile security alerts: Unisoc modem flaws and Apple spyware warnings

Security researchers from SSD Secure Disclosure have identified a two-stage vulnerability affecting budget Android devices using Unisoc modems. The exploit allows attackers to gain access to the Android kernel via a video call. By exploiting a flaw in the modem firmware, an attacker can move from the modem to the system memory. The vulnerability specifically impacts low-end models such as the Motorola E13, Realme C33, and Redmi A5. The attack requires the victim to accept a video call and necessitates that the attacker controls a VoLTE network.

Separately, Apple has implemented a system to issue critical security warnings directly on iPhones and iPads. These alerts notify users if they may have been targeted by highly sophisticated and expensive commercial spyware. While such attacks typically target journalists, activists, and politicians, Apple’s warnings are designed to alert any individual who may be at risk. The presence of a warning does not confirm a successful breach, but indicates a high level of suspicion regarding targeted surveillance attempts.
