Mobile security and digital learning trends in Japan and US

In Japan, university educators are observing a growing trend where students increasingly rely on smartphones and tablets rather than purchasing laptops for their studies. Despite university guidance recommending specific laptop models for coursework, some students express a reluctance to buy dedicated PCs, opting instead for mobile devices. This shift presents challenges for instructors conducting exercises involving standard office software like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as proficiency in these tools is difficult to maintain without personal computer access.

In the corporate sector, companies are facing a dilemma between mobile productivity and data security. As remote work and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies expand, the risk of information leaks via mobile devices increases. Traditional security measures, such as dedicated apps or VPNs, often impose high administrative burdens and poor user experiences. To address this, Google is expanding its Chrome Enterprise Premium features to mobile devices, aiming to provide robust Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and URL filtering through the standard Chrome browser on iOS and Android, reducing the need for specialized, cumbersome security applications.
