Mobile security: Protecting data and lines after theft

When a smartphone is lost or stolen, users must balance device recovery with data protection. Security tools for Android and iPhone allow for remote location tracking, playing sounds, or performing a remote wipe to erase sensitive information such as photos, messages, and banking applications. However, performing a remote wipe may impact the ability to locate the device later.

In Mexico, the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) advises against immediately canceling a phone number, as this is distinct from temporary blocking. Instead, users should contact their provider—such as Telcel, AT&T, or Movistar—to request three specific actions: blocking the service line, blocking the SIM card, and blocking the IMEI. The IMEI serves as a unique identifier that prevents the physical device from accessing mobile networks, regardless of the operating system.
