MobilePay launches age verification feature in Finland
MobilePay has launched a new age verification feature in Finland, allowing users to prove they meet specific age requirements through the app. The service does not disclose the user's exact date of birth; instead, it confirms whether the user is over 16, 18, 20, or 24 years old.
To ensure accuracy, the feature relies on strong authentication for users over 15. Users can also opt to include a photo from their passport by using their phone's NFC chip to read the document. Perttu Kröger, Finland's country manager for Vipps MobilePay, described the tool as a ‘light solution’ intended for scenarios such as movie theaters, kiosks, or events, particularly for young people who may not carry official identification.
While the feature can be integrated into merchant checkout systems or web services, it is not currently a legal identity document. It cannot be used for regulated sales like alcohol or tobacco, which are governed by strict oversight authorities. However, MobilePay aims to certify the service under the EU Digital Identity Wallet regulations next year, potentially evolving it into a full-scale digital identity tool.
