Modak prices rise during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations

As Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations continue, the traditional modak remains a central element of the festival, both for its spiritual significance and its rising market cost. In Western India, the steamed rice-flour dumpling known as Ukadiche Modak is considered the gold standard. However, consumers are facing increased prices due to the rising costs of ingredients such as coconut, jaggery, sugar, ghee, and fuel.

Large-sized Ukadiche Modaks are currently priced at approximately 40 rupees each, while medium-sized versions range between 30 and 35 rupees. This is a notable increase from previous years when prices typically sat between 22 and 30 rupees. Other varieties, including chocolate modaks and mawa modaks, are also available at various price points.

Beyond the economic aspect, the modak holds deep religious meaning. Known as 'Modakapriya' (the lover of sweet dumplings), Lord Ganesha is traditionally offered 21 modaks to symbolize spiritual surrender. Legends suggest the sweet represents the nectar of supreme wisdom, once presented to Goddess Parvati.
