Moddergat wind turbine replacement receives provincial permit

The province has granted a nature permit for the replacement of an existing wind turbine near Moddergat with a larger model. The new turbine, proposed by Stichting Dorpsmolens Ternaard, will have a tip height of approximately 60 meters.

The project is located in an open landscape near the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Natura 2000 area. While the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân issued an environmental permit in 2020, the project faced legal challenges and objections regarding noise and shadow flicker for nearby residents. The provincial permit is based on the original 2020 application, meaning it falls outside newer policies regarding solitary wind turbines. Residents have until September 2026 to submit a final objection.
