Model Context Protocol expands as industry standard for AI connectivity
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is emerging as a standardized open-source framework designed to connect artificial intelligence applications to external data, tools, and workflows. Originally introduced by Anthropic, the protocol has seen massive adoption, with governance transitioning to the Linux Foundation and the ecosystem growing to include over 15,000 active servers.
Various industries are implementing MCP to bridge the gap between AI models and operational environments. In the brokerage and real estate sectors, companies like Leverate and Lofty have launched MCP servers to allow AI agents to securely access proprietary data, analyze business activity, and perform authorized actions without custom integration code. In the legal sector, the protocol is being explored to help teams manage fragmented technology stacks by allowing AI to retrieve information from matter and document management systems.
As the technology scales, developers are addressing architectural challenges such as 'tool description bloat' and context poisoning. These issues, caused by overwhelming models with excessive data, are being mitigated through new specifications including stateless cores, multi-round-trip requests, and semantic routing to improve efficiency and reduce inference costs.
