The protocol is positioned as the “ODBC for AI agents,” enabling reusable connections and reducing the need for custom adapters.

For startups, MCP addresses the problem of tool sprawl—multiple systems like CRM, helpdesk, and documentation that AI agents must access. The 2026 roadmap adds enterprise‑managed authorization, single sign‑on, and auditability, helping growing teams centralise onboarding and off‑boarding while maintaining security. Adoption is seen as strategic rather than hype, with the Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation backing the open‑source ecosystem.
