Model Context Protocol (MCP) set to standardize AI tool integration

The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard first introduced by Anthropic in late 2024, provides AI agents with a universal way to connect to APIs, data sources, and other tools without building custom integrations for each combination. By acting as a smart layer on top of existing APIs, MCP turns the N × M integration problem into a simpler N + M model, allowing each AI model and each service to implement the protocol once.

Major AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google DeepMind and Microsoft, have already added MCP support, signalling industry‑wide adoption. Experts highlight that while MCP does not replace APIs, it evolves how AI systems use them. Security considerations are also emphasized; organizations must implement secure transport, authentication and authorization to mitigate risks associated with exposing tool access through the protocol.
