Model Context Protocol Standardizes Secure AI Agent Access to Enterprise Data
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides a universal standard for connecting AI agents to external data sources and business tools. It uses a JSON‑RPC interface that lets agents discover and call tools without custom code, and supports modern authentication frameworks such as OAuth 2.1, OpenID Connect and role‑based access control. Providers like Cloudflare, TrueFoundry and Logto offer infrastructure for deploying scalable, authenticated MCP servers, enabling agents to act on behalf of users with delegated permissions.
While MCP handles the mechanics of data exchange, the protocol does not convey the meaning of that data. Without appropriate context—metadata, business definitions and semantic grounding—agents can misinterpret raw rows and generate confident but incorrect answers. Experts stress that effective enterprise AI requires careful curation of the token context presented to the model, otherwise “context rot” and hallucinations can undermine reliability.
