Modena and Bologna: The 1325 Battle of Zappolino

In 1325, the Italian cities of Bologna and Modena engaged in a significant military conflict known as the Battle of Zappolino. While popular legend suggests the war was fought over a stolen wooden bucket, historical context reveals the conflict was rooted in deeper political and territorial rivalries.

During the 14th century, Italy was a fragmented territory of competing cities and principalities. The rivalry between Bologna and Modena was tied to the broader struggle between the Guelph and Ghibelline factions, which were aligned with the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire, respectively. Bologna was associated with the Guelphs, while Modena was under the rule of Rainaldo Bonacolsi, a Ghibelline leader.

The battle took place on November 15, 1325, near Zappolino. Although Modena achieved a significant victory that allowed its forces to advance toward Bologna, the city was not conquered. The wooden bucket became a famous war trophy during the aftermath of the hostilities.
