Modena attack investigation reveals suspect's online searches and mental state

Investigations into the May 16 attack in Modena, where Salim El Koudri drove a car into a crowd killing 55-year-old Monica Esposito and injuring seven others, have revealed details regarding the suspect's mental state and online activity. Preliminary psychiatric reports suggest that while El Koudri suffered from mental health issues, including a diagnosis of schizoid personality disorder, he may have been capable of understanding his actions during the attack.

Digital forensics from El Koudri's devices indicate he conducted extensive searches related to Islamic State, Osama Bin Laden, firearms, and jihadist attacks. However, investigators have not yet found evidence of direct contact with terrorist organizations.

The findings have sparked intense legal and political debate. Legal representatives for the victim's family have stated that if El Koudri is found to have possessed the capacity to understand his actions, they will request that terrorism charges be pursued.
