Modena Local Police expand K9 unit with new German Shepherd
The Modena Local Police Command is expanding its K9 unit with the addition of Lotus, a grey German Shepherd slightly over two years old. Starting in September, Lotus will join Pit, a Belgian Malinois who has been in service since 2020.
A municipal resolution approved the acquisition of the new unit, which includes the trained dog and a dedicated service vehicle, a Toyota Proace City equipped with necessary safety systems for canine transport.
The new unit will be utilized for prevention and control activities, both independently and in support of judicial authorities. The existing dog, Pit, has participated in 153 services since January, resulting in the seizure of nearly two kilograms of various narcotics. K9 operations in Modena focus on city parks, schools, red zones, railway and bus stations, reception centers, and the clearing of illegally occupied buildings, alongside educational activities to prevent drug consumption.
