Modena proposes civic honors for citizens involved in May 16 attack

The Modena municipal government has proposed awarding the ‘Valor Civile’ honor to eleven citizens who demonstrated exceptional courage during a criminal attack on May 16 in the Via Emilia Centro area. The proposal, deliberated by the Giunta, will be forwarded to the Prefecture for formal recognition.

The individuals honored include Gian Luca Signorelli, Abdalla Mohamed Osama Shalaby, Abdalla Mohamed Osama Mohamed Shalaby, Fabrizio Giallanza, Saku Alam Talukdar, Hosseini Iqbal, Silvano Ruccolo, Nicola De Marchi, Francesca de Niederhausern, Viktoriya Prudka, and Alessandro Misericordia. Some of these citizens acted to block the perpetrator, Salim El Koudri, while others provided critical assistance to victims.

Mayor Massimo Mezzetti stated that the attack deeply wounded the community and noted that the perpetrator remains in custody due to the timely intervention of these citizens. He described their actions as examples of generosity and civic virtue, stating the city has a duty to thank them in the highest institutional manner.
