Moderate Party proposes femicide as new criminal classification in Sweden
The Moderate Party in Sweden has proposed introducing a new criminal classification for the murder of women, referred to as femicide. The proposal aims to specifically address killings motivated by a victim's gender.
Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that the party intends for individuals convicted of such crimes to receive life imprisonment. She emphasized that a specific classification is necessary to bring greater attention to the issue and provide justice for victims and their families.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described the phenomenon as a constant societal failure. He argued that by clarifying the motive within the legal classification, the state can better visualize the patterns of violence and improve preventative efforts. The party aims to design the classification to be clear and legally sound to avoid the vagueness that critics have noted in other countries where similar laws exist, such as Italy, Croatia, Cyprus, and Malta.
