Moderaterna propose open perpetrator register for dating safety

The Moderate Party (Moderaterna) has proposed the introduction of an open perpetrator register to increase safety for women on dating apps. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer and MUF Vice Chair Linda Obiedzinski suggested that the register would allow the public to search for individuals convicted of serious crimes involving close relationships.

The proposal is inspired by ‘Jennie’s law’ in Ireland, which allows for the publication of names and details of convicted offenders in specific cases such as murder, rape, or serious domestic violence. Strömmer noted that while privacy for offenders is a consideration, the priority is the safety and freedom of women who currently feel insecure.

Additionally, the party is advocating for dating applications to have increased opportunities to perform background checks. This would involve granting these companies limited access to criminal record databases to verify that users have not been convicted of violent crimes in close relationships.
