Modern Greek Orthography book to be released with Vima
A new book titled ‘Modern Greek Orthography: History, Theory, Application’ is being released this Sunday in conjunction with Vima. The publication serves as an orthographic guide, examining the relationship between Modern Greek writing and various levels of linguistic analysis, including phonology, morphology, semantics, lexicology, and syntax.
Beyond its practical utility, the book explores the historical and ideological factors that shape spelling standards. It traces the evolution of the Greek language from the earliest written testimonies in Linear B through the creation and development of the Greek alphabet, covering ancient, Hellenistic, and Medieval Greek periods. The text also addresses contemporary debates regarding accent reform, the historical nature of Modern Greek orthography, and the phenomenon of ‘greeklish’.
