Modern human male pelvis shows unique evolutionary adaptation

Research published in Scientific Reports, led by Yoel Rak of Tel Aviv University, reveals a unique biomechanical adaptation in the pelvis of modern human males that distinguishes them from Neanderthals and modern human females.

By analyzing two rare complete Neanderthal pelvises—one discovered in Kebara Cave, Israel, in 1983 and the other at Sima de los Huesos, Spain, in 2001—researchers found that male Neanderthal pelvic proportions closely resemble those of modern human females. In contrast, modern human males exhibit a distinct offset of the acetabulum (the hip socket) by approximately 2.6 centimeters.

This anatomical feature facilitates a “pelvic rebound” by limiting the drop of the center of gravity during each step and storing potential energy in the thigh flexor muscles. This mechanism provides better shock absorption and enhances endurance during long-distance walking on uneven terrain, which likely aided in the persistence hunting of large game.
