Modern mountain retreats reimagined in Colorado and New Hampshire
Two distinct residential renovation projects highlight contemporary approaches to alpine living in Colorado and New Hampshire.
In Aspen, Colorado, a 1972 home near Independence Pass was transformed into a 4,000-square-foot multigenerational sanctuary. The project, led by architect Kara Thompson of KPT design and interior design firm Katharine Pooley, involved remapping dated, closed-off rooms to create airy gathering spaces. The design features white stucco siding, Colorado buff stone, and engineered white oak flooring, with a minimal cable railing system designed to maintain uninterrupted views of the mountains.
Near Sunday River Resort in New Hampshire, a Scandinavian-inspired home was designed by Kreg and Danielle Jones of Inscription Architects. The residence focuses on maximizing natural light and mountain vistas through large windows and cathedral ceilings. The layout includes three levels of living space, a massive granite fireplace, and a multi-tier outdoor deck equipped with a hot tub and firepit, providing direct access to adjacent ski trails.
