Modern prostate surgeries improve treatment of benign hyperplasia
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common urological conditions in men, affecting roughly half of those over 50 and up to 80% of men in their 90s. Typical symptoms include increased urinary frequency, a weaker urine stream, nocturnal urination, urgency and, in some cases, involuntary leakage. Doctors recommend that men begin urological screening around age 40‑45.
While medical (drug) therapies have seen little recent progress, surgical options have advanced markedly in the past decade. Laser procedures such as HoLEP and MiLEP provide faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, low complication rates and minimal impact on sexual function compared with traditional transurethral resection (RTU). The likelihood of prostate regrowth after these laser surgeries is estimated to be ten to twenty times lower. Newer minimally invasive techniques like Rezum and Urolift can be performed quickly without hospital admission, also preserving sexual health and offering low complication rates.
