Moderna and Merck report successful Phase III melanoma vaccine trial

Moderna and Merck have announced successful results from the Phase III INTerpath-001 clinical trial for an experimental mRNA-based therapeutic melanoma vaccine. The study evaluated a combination regimen consisting of a personalized mRNA therapy and the immunotherapy pembrolizumab (Keytruda) in 1,137 patients who had previously undergone surgery for high-risk cutaneous melanoma.

The trial met its primary endpoint, demonstrating statistically significant and clinically relevant improvements in recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival compared to pembrolizumab monotherapy. Unlike preventative vaccines, this therapeutic approach is designed to train the immune system to identify and eliminate remaining tumor cells following surgical removal.

This development marks a significant milestone as it is the first time an mRNA-based oncology treatment has successfully completed a Phase III trial. While full data details are pending formal scientific publication, the announcement has had a notable impact on market valuations for both biotechnology companies.
