Moderna and Merck report breakthrough in personalized melanoma vaccine trial
Moderna and Merck have announced successful results from a late-stage clinical trial for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, mRNA-4157 (V940), targeting melanoma. The therapeutic vaccine is designed to be custom-manufactured for each patient by sequencing their specific tumor to identify unique neoantigens.
When administered in combination with Merck’s immunotherapy drug Keytruda (pembrolizumab), the treatment has demonstrated a reduction in the risk of recurrence or death for patients with stage III and IV melanoma. The vaccine works by instructing the patient’s immune system to recognize and attack any remaining cancer cells that display the specific mutations identified during sequencing.
The program is currently undergoing Phase III evaluation to determine its potential as a new standard of care for adjuvant cancer treatment. Following the announcement, Moderna’s shares saw a significant increase.
