Moderna and Merck report successful Phase 3 mRNA cancer vaccine trial
Moderna and Merck have announced successful Phase 3 results from the INTerpath-001 clinical trial, evaluating a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, in combination with the immunotherapy Keytruda. The trial, which involved over 1,100 patients with surgically removed stage IIB-IV melanoma, met its primary efficacy endpoint for recurrence-free survival and its secondary target for distant metastasis-free survival.
Data indicated that the combination therapy reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 49% and the risk of distant metastasis or death by 59% compared to Keytruda monotherapy. The trial reported no new safety concerns. This represents the first randomized Phase 3 validation of neoantigen-based personalized cancer vaccines.
The announcement triggered significant market movement: Moderna's stock price surged approximately 177%, adding roughly $45 billion to its market capitalization, while Merck shares rose by 12%. Analysts noted that the high cost of such treatments, estimated at approximately $475,000 per dose, is driven by the complex, individualized manufacturing process required for each patient.
