Moderna and Merck report successful Phase 3 trial for mRNA skin cancer vaccine FAST-MOVING
Moderna and Merck have announced positive Phase 3 clinical trial results for intismeran autogene, an experimental mRNA-based cancer vaccine designed to treat melanoma. The trial, known as INTerpath-001, involved 1,137 high-risk patients with stage IIB-IV melanoma whose tumors had been surgically removed.
Interim data showed that the treatment, when used in combination with Merck’s immunotherapy drug Keytruda, met its primary endpoint of improving recurrence-free survival. It also met a key secondary endpoint by demonstrating a statistically significant reduction in the risk of distant metastasis compared to using Keytruda alone. Researchers reported no new safety concerns during the study.
This development marks the first successful Phase 3 study of an individualized neoantigen therapy and the first positive Phase 3 result for an mRNA-based cancer treatment. Analysts suggest the therapy could be a major commercial driver, with Barclays estimating it could generate approximately $3 billion for melanoma treatment by 2035. The companies plan to present full data at an upcoming medical conference and will engage with regulators regarding potential approval, which could occur as early as 2027.
