Moderna and Merck have announced successful Phase 3 trial results for their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene (V940/mRNA-4157), used in combination with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda. The INTerpath-001 trial, which included over 1,100 high-risk melanoma patients, demonstrated that the combination therapy significantly reduces the risk of recurrence or death compared to using Keytruda alone.

The vaccine is highly individualized, utilizing a computational algorithm to identify up to 34 specific neoantigens from a patient's unique tumor tissue to design a bespoke mRNA sequence. This approach aims to train the immune system to recognize and destroy any remaining cancer cells following surgical removal of the primary tumor.

Following the announcement, Moderna's stock experienced a massive surge, nearly tripling in value during a single trading session. While the full numerical data from the trial is pending presentation at upcoming medical meetings, the results are being hailed as a major milestone in oncology and the broader application of mRNA technology.
