Moderna mRNA flu vaccine mFlusiva released for older adults

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Moderna’s mFlusiva, the first mRNA-based influenza vaccine, for adults aged 50 and older. The vaccine is currently available at over 13,000 locations across the United States, including select pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens.

Unlike traditional flu shots that use inactivated or weakened virus particles, this mRNA technology provides instructions to the body to produce a viral protein, triggering an immune response. Clinical trials suggest the mRNA formulation offers superior protection against certain dangerous influenza A strains compared to standard-dose vaccines. However, data also indicates a higher frequency of mild-to-moderate systemic side effects, such as fever, fatigue, and muscle aches, though no increase in serious adverse events was reported.

Medical experts advise that while the new vaccine is an option for those seeking enhanced protection against influenza A, patients should prioritize receiving any approved flu shot in a timely manner rather than waiting if availability is delayed. The vaccine has not yet been tested in immunocompromised populations.
