Moderna and Merck announce successful melanoma mRNA vaccine trials

Moderna and Merck have announced successful results from the final phase of clinical trials for Intismeran, an experimental mRNA vaccine designed to treat melanoma. The personalized therapy works by sequencing a patient's tumor to identify specific neoantigens, which are then used to create a custom vaccine that trains the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells.

The trials involved over 1,100 high-risk patients and demonstrated that the vaccine could delay tumor recurrence. The production process, from tissue sampling to vaccine manufacturing, takes approximately six weeks. The companies intend to seek regulatory approval in the coming months.

In Europe, the Spanish pharmaceutical company Rovi is a key industrial partner, assisting with the production of active ingredients and the fill-and-finish process. Six Spanish hospitals participated in the clinical studies, highlighting the region's role in the research. Following the announcement, Moderna's stock experienced significant volatility, including a brief surge of up to 177 percent.
