Modernist architecture in Alicante and Alcoy featured in new program

The television program ‘L’herència invisible’ on À Punt explores the Modernist architectural heritage of Alicante and Alcoy. The series highlights the Círculo Industrial in Alcoy, an edifice reflecting the artistic expression of the industrial bourgeoisie through Secessionist ornamentation, including balconies and stained glass.

In Alicante, the program examines the Central Market, noting its use of polychrome ceramics, wrought iron, and a central dome. The market's history, including its role during the Civil War, is analyzed by architect Miguel Louis. To document these sites, the production utilizes LIDAR scanning technology to create detailed 3D models and access difficult structural areas.

A significant focus is placed on the San Antonio Abad Municipal Cemetery in Alcoy. Designed in the 19th century by engineer Enrique Vilaplana Juliá, the cemetery features a unique subterranean complex of galleries often compared to Roman catacombs. These galleries—named San Fabián, San Antonio, and San Severo—utilize the natural slope of the terrain to provide ventilation and natural light to the burial niches. The site contains approximately 750 niches and serves as a notable example of historical funerary architecture.
