MoDOT warns drivers of mowing crew hazards and oversized truck detours on Missouri highways

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) urged motorists to exercise caution around seasonal mowing crews operating on state routes. MoDOT maintains roughly 400,000 acres of roadside grass, mowing each route three times a year. Crews travel with a protective "follow" truck and flashing lights, and drivers are advised to slow down, avoid distractions, and use designated passing zones.

Concurrent construction on Interstate 55 from Fruitland to Scott City has required oversized and overweight trucks to be rerouted off the interstate. Initial detours through Route K in Cape Girardeau caused damage to concrete curbs at the Deerwood Drive roundabouts, prompting MoDOT to shift traffic to Exit 105 and later to the U.S. 61 diverging diamond interchange. The agency noted the damage is limited to roundabout curbs and is reviewing roundabout designs to better accommodate large loads. The multi‑phase project, which includes pavement repairs, bridge rehabilitation and new roundabout construction, is expected to continue through November 2027. MoDOT continues to remind drivers to give oversized vehicles ample space and to stay alert for both mowing crews and construction detours.
