Modretro M64 retro console released in 2026 revives Nintendo 64 on modern TVs and Switch 2

The M64, a new retro console built by Palmer Luckey’s hardware firm Modretro, reproduces the original Nintendo 64 hardware on an FPGA platform. It accepts original NTSC and PAL cartridges, supports the classic N64 controller and a modern HDMI output capable of 720p up to 4K. The device is priced at about $230 (≈ 250 €) with an optional Pro controller sold separately. Modretro is not affiliated with Nintendo.

Alongside the hardware launch, Nintendo announced remakes of two flagship N64 titles—Star Fox (released as Lylat Wars) and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time—exclusively for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, with the Star Fox remake available from 25 June 2026. The combined hardware and software releases aim to bring classic games to contemporary displays while preserving the original experience.
