Modular housing advances with container and expandable designs

Modular and prefabricated housing solutions are evolving through the use of repurposed shipping containers and expandable mobile structures. These technologies offer energy-efficient, cost-effective, and rapid alternatives to traditional construction.

Shipping container homes utilize recycled units to create modern, earthquake-resistant living spaces. These modular designs allow for easy expansion and can be customized for residential, commercial, or event purposes. By cutting sections of the containers, architects can create open-plan interiors featuring kitchens, dining areas, and terraces.

Expandable houses, such as those produced by WECHEER, function as compact packages during transport and unfold into much larger spaces upon arrival. These units often feature a central core with side wings that extend via hydraulic or mechanical systems. Most assembly occurs in a factory setting, meaning the units arrive at the site with walls, floors, windows, and sometimes full utilities like plumbing and air conditioning already installed.
