Croatia debates veteran pension increases in Parliament
The Croatian Parliament is debating legislative amendments to increase pensions for veterans of the Homeland War. Minister Tomo Medved presented the proposal, which includes a monthly increase of 3 euros for each month served in the combat sector and 0.50 euros for the non-combat sector. This measure is expected to affect approximately 174,000 veterans and their families, with an estimated budget of 58 million euros allocated for 2027.
Additionally, the government proposes an annual volunteer supplement of 20 percent of the base amount, which for 2027 would amount to 108 euros per person for 104,000 volunteers. The amendments also include raising the salaries for caregivers of 100 percent war invalids from 800 to 1,350 euros.
The debate has been marked by political tension. Damir Bakić of the Možemo! party claimed the government's proposal is a reaction to their earlier, rejected initiative to increase pensions for all veterans who continued working after the war. The parliamentary session also saw heated verbal exchanges, including insults directed at MP Dalija Orešković by HDZ member Josip Đakić during the discussions.
