Moengo school fire causes damage and theft of supplies

A fire broke out Wednesday evening at the O. S. Wonoredjo public school on Karnawiestraat in Moengo, Marowijne district. While the cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation by the police, authorities reported that a portion of the school was completely destroyed. No personal injuries were reported during the incident.

Marowijne-Zuidwest District Commissioner Clyde Hunswijk reported that although bystanders helped rescue school property, some individuals allegedly took items including books, tables, and chairs. Hunswijk has called for the immediate voluntary return of these goods, noting they are essential for education. A criminal investigation will be launched regarding the theft of school property.
